Those who live in Spain – or dream of a life under the Spanish sun – quickly discover that Three Kings’ Day (Día de los Reyes Magos) is at least as important here as Christmas. Every year on 6 January, Spain comes alive with colour, music and centuries-old traditions that feel like pure magic, especially for children.
The arrival of the Three Wise Men 🎺
The celebrations begin on 5 January with the famous Cabalgata de Reyes: a festive parade held in almost every city and village. The Three Kings – Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar – travel through the streets on beautifully decorated floats, accompanied by music, dancers and performers.
From the floats, sweets are thrown to the crowd, creating cheerful chaos and plenty of smiling faces. For many families, this is the perfect moment to head outside together and enjoy the warm Spanish atmosphere.
Presents on 6 January 🎁
In Spain, it is not Santa Claus but the Three Kings who bring the presents. On the evening of 5 January, children place their shoes by the door, often with some water or treats for the camels. The next morning, on 6 January, homes are filled with surprises.
This tradition extends the festive season and makes the winter months even more enjoyable.
Roscón de Reyes: a sweet tradition 🍰
No Three Kings’ Day is complete without Roscón de Reyes: a round, fluffy cake decorated with candied fruit and often filled with cream. Hidden inside are traditionally a small figurine and a bean.
Whoever finds the figurine is king or queen for the day; whoever finds the bean pays for the cake. A playful ritual that brings laughter to the table year after year.
Living in Spain: between tradition and sunshine ☀️
Three Kings’ Day perfectly illustrates how Spain keeps its traditions alive, with a strong focus on family, shared celebrations and outdoor living. This is exactly what makes living in Spain so appealing: a sense of community, the rhythm of the seasons and the many local festivities that add colour to the year.
