The enchanting pink lagoon of Torrevieja

Anyone visiting Torrevieja cannot miss one of Spain’s most extraordinary natural wonders: the pink lagoon, officially known as Laguna Salada de Torrevieja. Together with the green lagoon of La Mata, it forms part of the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja. It is a unique place where nature, culture, and wellness come together.

Why is the lagoon pink?
The striking color of the water is caused by a combination of micro-organisms, algae, and high salt concentration. In particular, salt-loving bacteria (halobacteria) and algae (Dunaliella salina) create the spectacular pink hue, which appears even more intense on sunny days. It almost feels like looking at a painting!

Salt production and history
The lagoon of Torrevieja has been important for salt production for centuries. Even today, salt is still harvested here, and the impressive white salt mountains around the lagoon are proof of that. These “mountains of white gold” are exported to many countries worldwide each year.

A paradise for birds and walkers
Besides its unique color and salt production, the lagoon is also a haven for birds. Flamingos, in particular, thrive here, as the lagoon offers their favorite food (tiny crustaceans) in abundance. In certain seasons, you can spot hundreds of them – a magical sight!

For nature lovers, there are beautiful walking and cycling routes around the lagoons, where you can enjoy the view and the fresh air in peace and quiet. Would you prefer something a little less strenuous? Then hop on the tourist train, which will take you not only past the lakes but also past other sights.

Health and wellness
The high salt concentration of the water and the mud from the lagoon are also believed to have healing properties. Many people use the mud on their skin as a natural spa treatment, said to help with skin conditions and joint pain.

A must-see on the Costa Blanca
Whether you love nature, photography, hiking, or simply unique views, the pink lagoon of Torrevieja is an absolute must-see
