While summer is coming to an end in many countries, here on the Costa Blanca and Costa Cálida we still get to enjoy the sun and sea a little longer. That’s why we’d like to explain what the colored flags on the beaches actually mean. Handy to know so you can enjoy the water safely!
✅ The main flags at a glance
Blue flag – Not a safety flag, but a quality label. Spain holds the world record with hundreds of beaches carrying this flag.
Green flag – Everything’s fine; the sea is calm and safe for swimming.
Yellow flag – Caution! Swimming is allowed, but watch out for strong waves or currents.
Red flag – Swimming is prohibited due to dangerous currents, pollution, or jellyfish. Fines for ignoring it can be high.
Black flag – Rare. The beach is closed, usually due to serious pollution.
Orange flag – The lifeguard is temporarily absent.
Jellyfish flag – White = swimming allowed, but be careful. Red = dangerous jellyfish, do not enter the water.
“Q” flag – Indicates Calidad Turística: an extra quality label for top beaches.
🏖 Good to know
On the Costa Blanca and Costa Cálida, you’ll mostly see green flags. That means: safe swimming, maximum enjoyment, and plenty of reasons why so many people not only visit but also choose to own a home by the sea.
