On August 13th, Elche transforms into the vibrant heart of one of Spain’s most impressive fireworks festivals: the Nit de l’Albà. This year, the celebration will be even grander, featuring a record amount of 2.7 tons of gunpowder and no less than 86,000 fireworks elements — from colorful palm-shaped fireworks to spectacular explosions.
This special tradition dates back to the Middle Ages, when families would launch rockets as a thank you to the Virgin Mary for their newborn children. Over the centuries, the Nit de l’Albà has grown into a citywide event that every resident proudly celebrates. Since 1989, the modern fireworks show has been produced by Pirotecnia Ferrández, who every year ensures an unforgettable spectacle.
The festivities begin at 11:15 PM, when residents light their fireworks from balconies and rooftops, bathing the city in a magical glow. The highlight follows exactly at midnight with the spectacular Palmera de la Virgen, launched from the tower of the Basilica of Santa María. This impressive firework “flower” rises up to 300 meters high and spreads over 500 meters wide, lighting up Elche as if it were daylight. Just before this moment, the entire city briefly turns off its lights, enhancing the magical character of La Noche del Amanecer (“The Night of the Dawn”).
Experience this unique blend of history, emotion, and spectacle yourself in the cozy and authentic city of Elche, the city with the largest palm forest in Europe!
