Tabarca - a hidden gem off the Coast of Alicante

Just off the coast of Santa Pola, in the province of Alicante, lies one of the Costa Blanca’s best-kept secrets: the island of Tabarca. Measuring only 1,800 meters long and around 400 meters wide, it's the smallest inhabited island in Spain. With only around 50 permanent residents, Tabarca offers peace, authenticity and charm—while attracting thousands of visitors each year in search of nature, history and relaxation.

A place full of history and charm

In the 18th century, Tabarca was settled by Italian fishermen who were relocated by the Spanish crown from the Tunisian island of Tabarka. The walled village, with its whitewashed houses, narrow streets and old church, reflects this unique heritage. The fortified walls and bastions are beautifully preserved and offer panoramic sea views.

A protected natural paradise

Tabarca is part of Spain’s first marine nature reserve. Its crystal-clear waters are among the most protected in the Mediterranean, making it a hotspot for snorkelers and divers. Birdwatchers and hikers will also enjoy its serene environment and unspoiled landscape.

Mediterranean cuisine & relaxed vibes

No trip to Tabarca is complete without enjoying the local cuisine. The island’s seafront restaurants serve fresh seafood and the famous caldero tabarquino, a traditional rice and fish dish. Add a glass of chilled wine and you’ve got the perfect Mediterranean experience. Tabarca makes for the ideal day trip; easily reached by boat from Alicante, Santa Pola, Guardamar or Torrevieja, the island is a peaceful escape just minutes away.
