How do you actually order a beer in Spain?
You can order a beer in different ways. But many foreigners make the mistake of ordering an "una cerveza". But that is not the right word, and you want a small glass, or a bottle or big beer.
The best known sense to order a beer is that of Tom Waes "Una Cerveza Por Favor". But this is not said to the Costa Blanca.
The most requested beer is the "Caña" (pronounced as Canja). In almost all of Spain this can be used for a beer from the tap which is served in a glass of 200 ml, often with a (or two) fingers thick foam but also very often not.
So in Spain people say "una cerveza por favor" but more "una caña por favor".
The bottles speak of "Tercio" in almost all of Spain.
The half liters, please see the British and Germans on holiday in Spain, are also drunk by the Spaniards and are called "Jarra".
Others are also sometimes "tanque" and "pinta", it just depends on what you remember.
Beer mixed with lemonade or "gaseosa" (a kind of spray water) is called a "clara" in almost all of Spain, but of course there are differences. In practically all of Spain one makes a "Clara" by first putting lemonade or gaseosa in a glass and then filling the glass further with beer from the bottle or tap. Normal ratio is 4 parts lemonade/gaseosa and 6 parts beer.
Now just ordering a beer beer is no longer possible after reading this article.
